New Cover for Jewel - Is it hot enough?

Word is the covers I've had up for Jewel of the Sun's Blood Destiny isn't hot enough. And despite what many say about reviews being a selling point for your books, the awesome ones this book has received isn't convincing the browsers to purchase.

For me the cover has been a hard one since day one. It not easy to find hot Native American photos to reflect the hero. I'm also not all that crazy to have nudity on my covers no matter how hot the story is. I'm not selling porn, I'm selling romance.

The other aspect is the genre. It's paranormal and compared to the current trend I'd call it a sweet or tame paranormal in the respect the story has no vampires or shapeshifters. It has ghostly apparitions, visions, and so forth. It also has a tad bit of a sci-fi influence. And the story centers around the gem, peridot.

So, with this in mind, a couple days ago, I went looking around at photos in hopes newer Native American photos had been added to the various sites I purchase from. There was a couple, but he was with a woman who wasn't a blond. And they are posed in such a way that cutting one or the other out will not work. Figures, right?

If you do your own covers, then you know it's not always a picnic to find the right photo. My husband looks at my covers and thinks I simply put a single photo up and slap the title as well as my name on it and wa-la. He has no idea that I use two and three different photos to put the covers together. I guess that's a good thing.

Anyways, Tuesday, I was thinking about some of the suggestions I'd received and well, I went in search of naked photos. This wasn't a new idea, but back then there wasn't any of a couple who could pass off as a Native American with a fair skinned blond. And more specificially an Apache. I must have gone through thousands of photos before one clicked. I took it and messed around with different overlay photos and different ranges of opacity.

My daughter-in-law was on her computer over on the loveseat and she probably thought I'd lost my mind. I sat here mumbling and cursing.

I must have put together four or five covers and rejected them all. They lacked that something-something. So, I decided to wait until my son came over, he has an awesome mind and eye when it comes to things like this. However, I became impatient waiting on him. I went back at it, scraping the overlay photos I was trying to use. I went back to the camera lens, but knew the one I had used on the second cover wouldn't work and nor did the others I had stored in my files. I went searching and grabbed like four more. It took a good two hours before I found the right camera lens, but it still lacked that special look.

Something clicked and I couldn't even tell you what caused it. I don't mess around with paint fills or brushes much, but I picked up the paint fill and started playing with it on different areas of the lens photo. I redid it at least three times before I got that 'oh, yeah' feeling. Then I clicked it one more time and you know when you get that satisfied high feeling and you know something is perfection - I got that.

I won't bore you with the font and size details, but I must have changed them four or five times before I was happy with it as well.

So, what do you think? Does it clue in the reader that it's a hot story with something more going on?

Rambling, Life is Good

Well, my garage isn't finished, my patio is still cluttered and so is my house. I ran out of room in my book shed so I must clean out the yard tool shed and move the camping and hunting gear over to it. I just haven't informed my husband of this. It's either that or buy a new shed - which isn't a bad idea now that I think about it. Maybe next year.

But alas, I have a new job which is awesome. I don't know how retirees do it with so much time on their hands. I was going insane. So, in between work, writing and sleep, I need to finish my spring tasks.

I really need cloned.

Over the next couple of months, my calendar is busy. I love it! Jeff goes back to school in two weeks, I have a baby shower, bridal shower, Jarrod's wedding, and my husband's 35th class reunion. And upteen birthdays, one of which is mine. Oh, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that among all this stuff, my husband and I will be celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary and Jeff will turn 18. Fun stuff!

I found the perfect mother of the groom's dress last weekend. The color is called eggplant otherwise known as purple, plum, and David's Bridal calls it Lapis.. They can't keep it simple can they? It was on sale and the cashier had a coupon she added to it. We saved $50. Awesome!

And did I mention that Christmas is 145 days away. Yeppers, putting on my Santa hat and making my list so I can keep an eye out for good deals. I'm excited. It's my favorite time of year.
I'm off to read some books I picked up during the Summer/Winter sale at Smashwords last month. Wasn't that an awesome sale? Did you pick any up?
